Being prepared for all the scenarios is always an important thing, don’t you agree? Of course, we can talk about numerous possibilities that can occur from time to time. Today, we want to focus on being prepared for things such as emergency scenarios, like when some natural disaster happens and you need to be as prepared as possible.
In these cases, it is an absolute must to have a bug out duffle bag. What does this mean? We are talking about a bag where you can insert all the things that might come in handy in situations such as these. Of course, it is highly unlikely you can prepare yourself for all the scenarios, but being as prepared as possible is always a plus.
Since this is a puzzling situation for many, we want to talk about the things you should always have in your bug out bag in case of an emergency. Sure, different people have different needs and preferences. However, we will talk about general things that are needed by anyone, no matter the situation.
1. First Aid
Even though the disaster will not last too long in many cases, you need to pack a first aid kit. A first aid kit comes as an essential element in cases where you or someone has been injured during a disaster. Sometimes, you cannot count on the help of a medic for days. By having one of these, you can potentially save someone’s life.
As you can presume, it is debatable what you should have in your first aid kit. Still, we want to point out that some things are essential. For instance, we are talking about bandages. Besides these, make sure you have enough medical tape and gauze with you. Of course, you cannot use these properly without scissors.
It wouldn’t hurt to have a first aid guidebook, especially if you don’t have enough experience with using these. Besides these, you should have some medicine, like some antibiotics, and things such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and other sorts of painkillers you can come across. It is also important to include burn gel.
Even though some would argue that having clothing with you is not an essential thing for a bug-out bag, we beg to differ for various reasons. For instance, you never know if you will be in a situation where your clothes have been torn. Plus, it can always happen that you will get wet. If you’re in the winter months, this can be fatal for you.
Since you will not be able to predict these things, it is important to have some spare clothes that protect you in this situation. While there’s no consensus on how much of it you need, it is clear that having at least two spare pants, hoodies, and a couple of shirts is essential. You should pack those that do not use too much space in your bag.
3. Food and Water
Naturally, food and water are two things that are essential for survival, and in cases of emergency, you need a lot of them. Of course, a human can be without food for some time, but you can be sure that it’s not going to be comfortable at all. So, you need to be smart about how much you pack in these.
For instance, it is more than clear that you cannot pack a lot of it, so it wouldn’t serve your needs for a long time. Therefore, it is essential to be smart about this. We would advise you to pack smaller cans. That way, you will not use too much space inside the bag, and you can pack enough for a couple of days.
When it comes to water, humans can survive up to three days without it. There is no way anyone can survive more than that. For that reason, it is essential to pack enough of it. We think that having enough of it for a couple of days, before help arrives, will increase your chances of survival quite a bit.
4. Shelter and Bedding
The next thing we want to point out is the importance of having some shelter and bedding with you. These days, tents can be packed to look so small, so you will not have any problems with packing one of these. That way, you will ensure that you’re protected from the weather conditions such as rain.
Besides the tent, you need to pack a sleeping bag. Sleeping in a tent, without anything to cover yourself with can be a problem. The last thing you need in situations such as these is that you catch a cold. Once again, today’s sleeping bags are packed small, so they will not use too much space in your bug out bag.
Packing these is essential, not just for the sake of comfort. In situations when you need to invest your best efforts, you need to be as well-rested as possible. Your mental and physical preparation is essential in these cases. By having these with you, you will ensure that this is exactly what will happen.
5. Cooking Items
Last but not least, we want to talk about the cooking items. You don’t know how much the emergency is going to last, therefore, it is essential to have these with you so that you can prepare food. Besides cooking the food you have packed, you can also cook the food you gather around.
For you to do that properly, we would advise you to bring at least one hobo stove. The best way we can describe this one is like carrying a mini campfire in your backpack. You don’t need to spend too much time setting it up, which is always a big problem. At the same time, you should have some fuel with you, to fire it up when needed.
Getting packed for emergencies is not a walk in the park, so you need to be pretty careful about what items you will include. Here, you can take a look at a couple of items that are an absolute must for your bug out bag.
